Students from Encinal High School video production class will be on site next week on Tuesday, May 23rd, to take videos of our school in action.  They will be producing a documentary about the Board meeting on Tuesday night, and the effect of the decision on our school.  I am sending out an opt out form that you can use to tell me that you do not want your child to be part of the project.  Please find the letter attached.  You can also find a hard copy in the office.  Again, you only need to turn in the form if you don't want your child to be part of the film.

Thank you.

Dear Lum families,

On May 23rd the AUSD Board will vote on whether or not to close Lum. Before that vote, the district decided to survey our Lum community to find out where families would like their children to go IF the Board votes to close Lum. The purpose of the survey, that was sent out to all Lum families, is to give parents a voice in the relocation plan, IF one is necessary.

It is especially IMPORTANT THAT FAMILIES WITH CHILDREN GOING INTO 4TH AND 5TH GRADE NEXT YEAR FILL OUT THE SURVEY.

In the event of Lum closure, we have the option of setting up a new 4th and 5th grade program in the Wood Annex (the space that was used by ACLC until a few years ago). This would be separate from the middle school, with a separate lunch and bell schedule, and would let the 4th and 5th graders stay together, with fewer transitions, former Principal Cammie Harris, and the continued option to walk to school. Once the 4th and 5th graders graduate, (in 2 years) Wood would return to a middle school 6-8 again.

Please vote for this option if it appeals to you.

If you do not vote for it, it’s very likely that the WOOD OPTION WILL NOT HAPPEN.

If you have any questions, feel free to email me.

DISTRICT NEEDS RESPONSES BY 5/19.

Thanks,

Kelly Scott

Structural engineers have determined that Lum Elementary School may not be safe for long-term use because the soil on the campus would be subject to significant liquefaction during a strong earthquake. You can find more information on this web page. The public is also invited to a special Board of Education meeting on April 28 at 6:30 pm at Wood Middle School where this issue will be discussed.

This is just a kind reminder that the Staff Parking Lot is only for Lum staff.  Even with some staff parking on Otis Drive, the parking lot is at full capacity.

AIK Pickup  AIK has designated labeled parking spots for AIK pickup.

Volunteers  If you will be volunteering at the school for part of the day, we ask that you use either the designated labeled visitor spots on the right of the driveway or on the street.

Thank you for your cooperation!

We are continuing to work with Maintenance, Operations, and Facilities (MOF) for the reinstallation of our basketball poles.  AUSD received from the contractor a quote of over $20,000 to reinstall the poles, paint lines that are more conducive to PE, and paint classroom numbers.  They are looking into alternatives and will let me know once they have them.  I have also made suggestions, and I will let you know as soon as I receive an update.

Let's reduce nasty pglobal-smog-26819190.jpgollution and car craziness around school.  For the two-week period from April 13th through April 24th, walk, bike, ride the bus, or carpool with another household to and from school.  Be sure to log your mode of transport everyday.  The grade with the highest percentage of students doing their part will win the Golden Sneaker Trophy and celebrate with a smoothie party using the bike blender.

Don't worry if you live too far to walk or bike, just leave the car a few blocks away from school and walk that bit.

Beginning July 1, 2013, the State of California changed the funding formula for public education and requires school districts to develop a Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP). The LCAP is a plan that aligns the District’s educational goals with financial resources. The LCAP is a critical part of the new Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF). Under the LCFF all Local Educational Agencies (LEAs) are required to prepare an LCAP, which describes how they intend to meet annual goals for all pupils, with specific activities to address state and local priorities identified pursuant to Education Code Section 52060(d).

California school districts must engage parents, educators, employees, and the community to establish these plans. The plans will describe the school district’s overall vision for students, annual goals and specific actions that will be taken to achieve the vision and goals. The LCAPs must focus on eight areas identified as state priorities. The plans will also demonstrate how the district’s budget will help achieve the goals, and assess each year how well the strategies in the plan were able to improve outcomes.

We invite all AUSD parents/guardians to complete the attached optional and anonymous survey by March 31, 2015. Participating is easy: simply click on the link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/YSSMZB2

AUSD would also like to survey for student voices and opinions. We encourage parent/guardians to support younger students (4th grade and beyond) in completing the survey and hope that older students also take advantage of the link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/7SSQBN8

We are officially beginning our GATE assessment on Monday, March 30, 2015, and will test through Thursday, April 2, 2015. Good attendance is encouraged during these days of test administration. The assessment should take no more than one hour each morning. This is not the sort of test that can be prepared for and your students should not be worried or nervous about it. Here is a description of the CogAT (GATE assessment):

CogAT appraises the cognitive development of students from kindergarten through grade 12. The test measures students’ learned reasoning abilities. Although grounded in biological processes, these abilities are developed through in-school and out-of-school experiences. The questions on CogAT require students to demonstrate their reasoning abilities in each of three symbol systems most closely related to success in school: verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, and nonverbal reasoning.

  • The Verbal Battery assesses students’ abilities to use search, retrieval, and comparison processes that are essential for verbal reasoning.

  • The Quantitative Battery assesses students’ abilities to reason about patterns and relations using concepts that are essential in quantitative thinking.

  • The Nonverbal Battery assesses students’ abilities to reason with somewhat more novel questions that use spatial and figural content.

If you would like to learn more about GATE or opting out of this assessment, please contact Principal Lawrence Gotanco at lgotanco@alameda.k12.ca.us.
